BALÁZS VIRÁGH SOLO HU

Drawing from the ancient tradition of Indian rhythmic art, Balázs explores a musical language that reaches beyond rhythm itself. Apart from rhythmical complexity, the vocalization of compositions and the expressive voice of the Pakhawaj, rhythm becomes lyrical - picturing delicate stories and emotions.

Biography

Balázs Virágh is a Hungarian Pakhawaj player and educator dedicated to the classical rhythmic traditions of North India. He is a senior disciple of renowned Pakhawaj master Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma, representing the Nathdwara tradition, currently taking guidance from the celebrated tabla maestro, Pt. Yogesh Samsi. He has graduated from Sangeet Natak Akademi Kathak Kendra, New Delhi with exemplary marks under the guidance of Pt. Shashikant Pathak.

His musical approach explores the Pakhawaj not simply as a percussion instrument, but as a language. Rooted in the ancient practice of padhant - the vocal recitation of rhythmic compositions - his playing reveals the lyrical, narrative and expressive dimensions hidden within rhythm. His research focuses on old styles of Pakhawaj playing, and translations of old compositions from Brajbhasha and Hindi.

Balázs performs both as a soloist and accompanist and collaborates with western musicians aswell. He is a noted musician worldwide, performed with Grammy Awardee Chandrika Tandon and some of India's greatest classical maestroes, like Padmashri Ud. Wasifuddin Dagar, Pt. Nirmalya Dey, Ud. Irfan Khan, Dagar Bandhu.

He is also the founder of Ganapati Music School in Budapest, where he teaches Pakhawaj, Indian rhythm and organises events for Indian classical music.
