DUNYHA RO, USA, MK, HU

Transylvanian folk songs reimagined through doom, free improvisation and dark jazz.

Biography

DUNYHA is an international music project based in Budapest, led by vocalist Ilka Kisgyörgy, reimagining traditional Transylvanian folk songs through an experimental lens. The ensemble’s distinctive sound blends collective free improvisation with elements of punk and doom metal, creating a sonic world that honors folk roots while placing them in a bold, contemporary context. Central to the project is the idea of the “untouched ear”, musicians who approach folk material from outside the tradition. Free from stylistic expectations, they offer raw, intuitive interpretations that reconnect with the psychological depth of these songs in unexpected and emotionally powerful ways.
